Camels.

When I pictured camels before I took my advanced physiology course, I seriously only thought dumb, water-filled-humped mammal that lives in the desert and of the cigarette brand.

But camels are seriously something else....They:
  • do NOT store water in the hump, it's actually fat.
  • walk parallel to the sun's rays to minimize the radiation absorption.
  • have long, thin legs which allow for minimal contact with the heat from the sand.
  • can comfortably carry 330 pounds for up to 10 days without any water!
  • can upregulate their body temperature during the day and lower their body temperature at night.
  • don't sweat until its temperature reaches 42 degrees Celsius! (almost 108 degrees Fahrenheit!)
  • have fur whose fur allows them to limit body heat gain and prevent water loss from the skin.
  • have a nasal system that allows them to keep their brain temperature 2 degrees Celsius lower than its body!
  • can lose up to 33% of its total body water without suffering serious consequences. (Losing even 12% of total body water in humans can have detrimental effects....)
  • can rehydrate very quickly, in less than 48 hours.
  • can drink up to 100 liters of water in 10 minutes! (if it is 500 kilograms)
  • urinate on themselves to cool off via evaporation O.o
Kind of cute now....Well not really when I googled "camels" but this one was kind of cute....hahah
